THE WELLS CASE
(By Telegraph—Prom ''Vedette.'')
AUCKLAND, This Day. lho appeal of Mervyn Wells, owner | or. "Wedding March, who was disqualified for a year by the Auckland Racing Club stewards on Saturday in connection with the running of Monisahib and the appeal of W. Reid, the rider of the ltorse, will be heard at a special meeting of the Auckland District Committee tomorrow (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. Wells states that the instructions he gave to Reid were to keep Memsahib in belaud the field until five furlongs from home. Reid, in evidence, corroborated this, but as the race was run he overdid the waiting and pulled Memsahib about a good deal. Memsahib raced out with the leaders in the Hunters ' Hurdles on the first day, but failed to run and a change of tactics was decided on. Wells states he did not back Memsahib on Saturday, and at the inquiry said that he accepted full responsibility for the action of the jockey in the race. Reid is an obscure apprentice with little public experience at all, and this was his first rjde in a steeplechase. It is understood that if the District Committee reverses the stewards ' decision the last will not be heard of the matter, for probably thej stewards and the stipendiary stewards will take the case to the Racing Conference appeal judges. Wedding March is owned by R. Hannon, and Weils's lease expires in a fortnight. The arguments as to Wedding March starting on the third day, if Wells succeeds with his appeal, are, settled by the horse not being weighted for Wednesday's races. Under the rules ho is not eligible to run.
