GIRL IMPRISONED

TWO YEARS FOR THEFT

CASE TOO GRAVE FOR

PROBATION

(By Telegraph.—-Press Association.)

CHRISTCHUKCH, This Day. Nancy Hastings Carr, aged 22, who last week pleaded guilty to stealing £1592 from Drayton James, draper, by whom she was employed as secretary, was to-day sentenced* to reformative detention for a term not exceeding two years.' Mr. M. J. Gresson, counsel for the prisoner, said that if his Honour could extend probation, there would be no difficulty in regard to employment for the prisoner and supervision over her. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr. Donnelly) said he had nothing to say. His Honour Mr. Justice Adams said that on Friday he had adjourned conI sideration of the case, although lie then had given anxious consideration to it, in order to go more carefully into all the circumstances in view of what counsel had then said. Further consideration, however, had ' not satisfied - aim that he would be justified in'granting probation. The offence, to which tke prisoner had frankly pleaded guilty, was of a serious and unhappily an increasing nature. If he had had.to consider only the prisoner's'welfare and reformation, he would probably have taken quite a different view, but iie had j to consider also the effect on the pubI lie, and the necessity to mark the gravity of the offence. The prooer course, ho thought, was to order "detention for reformative treatment.
