ADULTERATED LIQUOR

"PUBLIC MUST BE PROTECTED"

DILAPIDATED HOTELS

The annual meeting of the "Wellington District Licensing Committee was held to-day, Mr: W, G. Eiddcll, SII presiding. There were also present Messrs. P. Meadowcroft, J. W. Ellison G. Peterick, M. A. Carr, and Clark. ' Dealing with the police report, the chairman said that it was shown that the conduct of the hotels in the district during the past quarter had been, generally speaking, satisfactory. There had been, however, some prosecutions concerning four hotels, for after-hour trading, and three licensees had been prosecuted by the Health Department tor selling adulterated liquor. "The committee- regards the offence of adulterating liquor as very serious and one, which, if continued, would warrant the cancellation of the licenses of the particular licensees who indulge in the practice," said Mr. Riddell. "The public must be protected. Licensees are expected to sell good liquor or liquor of standard brands, and should not make a profit by means of adulteration. ' ' The most important part of the report, said Mr. Eiddell, dealt with the condition of buildings, and in the majority of cases, the premises were in satisfactory repair. There were, however, five hotels which were stated to be very old and fast approaching the .stage when they would be past repair. The committee would advise the owners to take what steps they could to remove the objectionable features. The following transfers of licenses were granted: Metropolitan Hotel, John Eyan (executor of Patrick Eyan) to Bridget Eyan; Central, Margaret Diamond .to Frederick Henry EennieForesters' Arms, Henry Mann to Percy Herbert Hay ward; Thistle Inn Johanna Oben to Cox Gordon. The chairman said that it was within the knowledge of the committee that more than one wholesale business'was run by the same person, and there were applications by outsiders for wholesale licenses. The committee failed to:see why one holder should require two licenses, as it created a monopoly and was against public policy. Consideration of the applications referred to was deferred till this afternoon.
