TEAM'S SPIRIT ADMIRED
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Eeceived Ist June, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 31st May. The match between Sussex and New Zealand was concluded at Hove to-day, when the visitors, with their first victory of ithe tour within reach, were on their toes throughout the day. They bowled and fielded with great keenness, and their team work was ideal. Among the bowlers, Merritt and Blunt, were outstanding. The result was a decisive win for the" New Zealanders by eight wickets. With, a deficiency of 150 runs on*the first innings, Sussex had commenced their second innings on the previous day, ten runs being scored without loss. The opening batsmen were soon disposed of to-day, but Isherwood and Wensley * subsequently m ad c fair contributions. Then Arthur Gilligan threatened to defer victory by slogging in dashing . manner. He hit a ball for six into a garden outside the ground, lut his careeT was cut short when Blunt sent down an innocent - looking
"googly." The match was really won in the first few overs of the day when A. H. H. Gilligan and Wengley were dismissed cheaply. Blunt disposed of the tail-enders during a spell of deadly bowling. The wicket-keeping by Jame3 was greatly admired. _ With Sussex all out for 191, New Zealand required only 42 runs to win and Bernau and Allcott looked like wiping out the deficit, until Bernau spooned a ball to mid-off. A little later James was dismissed by a dazzling catch in the longfield. The victory has delighted all cricketlovers, who admire the genuine spirit of the New Zealanders in playing the game for the game's sake. ? Following are the details:— ... 'SUSSEX.
