HUTT ROAD FEES
MOTORISTS WELL CONTENT
OTHER CENTRES INTERESTED
A suggestion made by the Mayor of Petone, Mr. D. M'Kenzie, at to-day'a meeting of the City and Suburban Highways Board, that the board should consider a reduction of motorists' Hutt road fees—a reduction which was generally expected by motorists—was promptly jumped upon, by several speakers all at once.
"Not a chance," said tho Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup. "Never on your life," "Who said so?" and more an the same strain.
The motorists' j*presentative, Mr. S. G. Nathan, said that motorists had not asked for a reduction and did not expect one either, but, on the other hand, they were not going to pay a higher fee; that they had from the Government.
' "But we have a very good 30s worth," be continued, "and we admit it very cheerfully. Also we wish to remind the Wellington City Council, and the councils of Petone, Lower Hutt, the Hutt County, and the other local bodies that they are on a particularly good wicket. Auckland, Canterbury, and Otago have no such special rating schemes by which their motorists help substantially in paying for the roads."
Mr. Troup replied that it would be found that others would shortly follow in the footsteps o| Wellington. They had made a start in Dunedin, and tho idea would spread. It was a happy combination, by which everyone benefited.
