UNSETTLED WEATHER
UNPROMISING OUTLOOK.
COLDER CONDITIONS LIKELY
Changeable and showery weather has been experienced over the week-end, and heavy • rain fell in various parts -of the country ori Sunday night, the effect of a disturbance to the westward of New Zealand. Several heavy rainfalls, other than those which were mentioned in "The Post" on Saturday, were recorded. During the, past twenty-four hours rain fell heaviest in Wellington between 2 o'clock and" 3 o'clock this morning, when the weather was quite calm. At the same time there was a distant thunder-storm. Nearly half - an inch of rain was recorded. The heaviest rainfall reported this morning was from Arthur's Pass, which has 246 points to add to its ' record. The total rainfall for the.month in Wellington is now 5.46 in. > This morning 56 points were recorded, while yesterday the gauge showed 3 points. During the past six I days 4.74 in of rain have fallen in WelI lington. The average for the , month is i 4.76 in. ..■.....'•.■■ ■ A cyclonic storm was reported by three ships on the Tasman Sea during the week-end, but so far the disturbance apparently is confined to the ocean. There has been evidence of the storm, however, in the winds and general atmospheric conditions prevailing in New Zealand. Anti- I cyclonic conditions are ruling southward! of New Zealand, and conditions are very | unstable. In his forecast to-day the Dominion -Meteorologist" (Mr. D. C. Bates): states that westerly winds may be expected, strong to gale at -times, and backing to southerlie3 northward of New Plymouth and Napier, with south-easterlies elsewhere. Unsettled and cloudy weather is predicted, with rain probable generally, and snow on the higher levels, particularly in the South. Rivers are likely to be high, with much colder weather to follow. The barometer probably will rise high about the middle' of the week, and in the ordinary course of events there should be a. spell of fine weather.
