A VILLAGE THREATENED
NEW YOEK, 27th May: A message from-New Orleans states that residents of New Iberia, on the east bank of the Bayou Teche, who up tLtll ■?* J" ai BOomed th« thought that the flood waters would reach the hamlet were precipitated into panic when the levee broke and water ?a£d through the mam streets. Automobiles and horses were abandoned in the mad that the rise- was slow, the inhabitants feverishly packed their belongings and flocked to the roads leading to the high land* It is expected that the village will be mundated in a few hours. The force of the flood generally is regarded as being spent, and New Orleans is considered to be out of danger. The river has dropped to the lowest level since early April. Betting since the flood's beginning has been-feverish, many gamblers who bet against a 21-foot rise paying out.
