FALSE PRETENCES
YOUNG WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY

"She is something of an adventuress," remarked the Chief-Detective in the Police Court when a well-dress-ed young woman .of 25 nanicd Minn Mary Lang pleaded guilty to two charges of false pretences. The detective said that the accused arrived from Chi-istchureh last month and stayed at a first-class hotel. She went to a drapery firm and told an elaborate story-, Sbout wealthy parents who owned a sheep station at Taradale, and on the strength of this obtained clothing valued at over £7. She then proceeded to a boot shop, telling much the same story and obtaining ,shoes. Subsequently she wont to the country, where she was ■arrested. She had convictions in both Christchuvch and Auckland. The prison matron 'said that the accused at Christchurch. embezzled over £100 by opening an employer's letters and extracting the cheques. She hnd been on probation. The accused was remanded. ,
