M'GIRR BEST BOWLER ON DAY

LONDON, 16th May.

The weather was dull and cold with raiu threatening for the resumption of the match betwen Essex and New Zealand at Leyton. Bain had fallen yesterday, but the pitch was not seriously affected. The position at the end of the first day's play was that Essex, in reply to New Zealand's score of 289, had made 57 runs for the loss of two wickets, Cutmore being not o,ut with 21. Cutmore was accompanied by O'Con* nor to continue the innings, M'Girr and Bernau taking up the .attack for

New Zealand. Play had not been in progress long before Blunt relieved Bernau. The latter, fielding at mid-, off, unfortunately dropped a catch from Cutmore oft M'Girr-when the batsman's socre was 26. The total reached 90 when Merritt was given a hand in <;he attack. Cutmore was caught by Daere off Merritt when his score was 47.

The bowling, with the exception of that of M'Girr, was erratic. Eventually Lowry succeeded in disposing of O'Connor as the result of an appeal for lbw. O'Connor's score of 65 included nine fours. Rusaell was joined by Hubert Ashton prior to lunch, and when the adjournment was taken the total was 206.f0r four wickets—Eussell not out 42, Ashton not out 7.

When play was resumed runs came freely, but after the batsmen had put on 74 runs in forty minutes M'Girr improved matters for New Zealand. Jn one over he dismissed Eussell, and had Douglas and Morris takon in tho slips, Dempster making two superb catches. A little later play was suspended for ton minutes owing to rain.
