UNEMPLOYMENT

TO SPEED UP RELIEF WORK

Until formalities are complied with it is not possible for the City Council to set under way the proposed widening work on the Point Halswell road to provide relief to the unemployment position, but endeavours are being made to have the preliminaries speeded up. Even so, it does not appear, the Mayor has pointed out, that anything can be done before the end of the month, as the Act require* that fourteen days' notice must be given of intention to raise loans for the relief of unemployment. Mr. Troup has already interviewed the^Hon. W. D. Stewart (Minister of Finance) on the matter. Quite a big proportion, larger than was the ease last winter, of those seeking work at present are men who are not used to heavy work, but who have recently lost their employment through retrenchment of office, shop, and business staffs.
