SURF QUEEN CROWNED
ISLAND BAY CARNIVAL CLOSED. The queen contest organised by the Island Buy Life-saving and Surf Club to raise funds, for additions to their clubhouse was brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday night in the Masonic Hall, when the coronation of Miss Doris Lennie (Eastern the queen of the carnival was performed by tlie Minister of Education (the Hon. R. A. Wright). As representatives of both the East and West districts of the bay had competed in the carnival, the hall was decorated with their, colours, and also with ferns. Dancing to Tutschka’s Orchestra took place until 9 p.m., when the crowning ceremony took place. The queen was met at the throne steps by the president of the Surf Club (Mr. A. Dicker), and was 'accompanied by her maid of houo.ur, Miss Mona M'Clure. The Western queen, Miss Dulcie Howard, was preceded by Miss Kathleen Beveridge as flower girl, and her trainbearers were Misses Joy and Gloria Stevenson. Miss Nita Vidulich was the Western queen’s maid of honour, and she was accompanied by Miss Reta Beveridge as her train-bearer. Others taking part in the ceremony were Mr. Roy Thomas (herald), Mr. Frank Beveridge (Hag bearer), Aliss Edna Ingram (crown bearer), and Master Paul Tanner (sceptre and orb bearer). Mr. Wright was introduced to the gathering by Mr. Dicker. He regretted that Mrs. Wright was unable to lie present, and congratulated the members of the Surf Club on tho result of their efforts. They had made over £4OO, which was a surprising amount, and showed what could be done if the work was taken up in the right spirit. He felt highly honoured at having the opportunity of crowning the carnival queen, Miss Doris Lennie,(the Eastern district’s candidate. After the ceremony, certificates were handed to the carnival queen and to the Western queen by the president of the club, and various other presentations were made by Mr. D. Hunter (chairman, Eastern committee) and Mr. T. A. Ricketts (chairman, Western committee). Apologies were received from the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup), Dr. and Mrs. Slater. Mr. C. J. B. M'Dougall, and Mr. G. R. C. Jackman. . ‘
