BLAZING CARGO
COPRA ALIGHT ON SOMERSET
Shortly after 6 o'clock last evening an outbreak of fire was discovered in the No. 2 bridge deck hold of tho Federal Company's liner Soniorsot, now loading under the auspices of the New Zealand Shipping Company, On the alarm being given, the ship's hoso was brought into action, and later two leads were applied from tho Firo Brigade's engine. The outbreak occurred among 3000 bags of copra. The flames were quickly suppressed, and the unloading of the copra was immediately commenced. Owing to the severe drenching the undamaged copra received, it will be necessary to spread tho copra out and allow it to dry When reconditioned it will bo shipped to London by another vessel. ' Tho hold was opened for tho purpose of loading wool, but tho outbreak was fortunately discovered bofore any had been put on board.
Approximately 1000 bags of copra were slightly damaged by firo and water. Tho Fire Brigade was occupied for three hours in dealing with the outbreak. No insurances are available.
The cause of the firo was probably due to spontaneous combustion. The Somerset suffered no structural damage and she is to sail at daybreak on Tuesday for Hull and London, via Panama
