FAULTS IN PORTRAITURE

Shaw's portrait was probably banned by the Koyal Academy because of the atrocious clothes "which painters seem to introduce into all pictures nowadays." Thereupon this sartorial authority proceeds to bemoan the creases and contortions in the clothes '■' which mijlce the judicious mourn." Taking tne subjects one by one the expert discovers buttonholes not corresponding with buttons/ monstrous collars, and appalling ties. As an exatople, it says: "John Fleming wears buckskin strappings to. his riding breeches. The right leg strapping is placed correctly, but, incredible .to relate, the left leg strapping is- painted outside. For the horrors of the worst' mistake ever seen in the Academy take ■ Lord Greenway's portrait. ; v* small advantage in being a peer if on? is not allowed buttonholes to one'i clothes."
