, CHRISTCHTJRCH, This Day. - A resident of Hbkitika, Mr. J. Fopte, who was in Christchurch yesterday, said that he had had thiity-sis years' experience of West. Coast river's from Greymo.uth southwards and never, had seen them in better condition.than at present in regard to.-whitebait. About 125 fishermen were supplying two whitebait factories in Hbkitika, ..and large quantities of fish were now being sent to Christchurch, arriving in this city on the evening of the day'on which they,were,caught. . '""■■■ As long as the rivers were kept clear from pollution by sawdust 'from the mills, the industry would increase enormously and' would, prosper, but if that form of pollution was allowed the industry would simply be wiped put. He suggested that if there was-an open season from, Ist September, to 7th December, the fish would have: June, J,uly> and August to run, which would 4>e sufficient.-,.,. ... . ..: . ' ;,: ■ .
