NO NEED TO FEAR

WHEAT FOR POULTRYMEN

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post")

CHEISTCHUBCH, This Day

That the Canterbury poultry men need have no cause to fear a shortage of wheat this year is the opinion of tho manager of a Christchureh firm in close touch with ' the position. He states that, though tho Auckland poultry men aro hard pressed, for supplies, Canterbury need not import from 1 Australia. , ' .

"Up to the present, "he continued, r'wo have had supplies oft locallygrown wheat and have had no need to import -from Australia for the poultry men's needs. In the new harvest there is no indication ,that there -will be an immediate shortage. There would be no benefit in ; getting wheat from Australia, as it cannot be landed here at a rate cheaper than locallyferown wheat. Wheat is 5s 5d a bushel in -Australia, plus. Is 3d,: the cost of bringing it to New Zealand. This makes the imported price 6s 8d without the addition of handling charges. "We are now in sight of our own local wheat of which, from.all indications, there will be a surplus. Prices of from 5s 6d to 6s have been mentioned, and these, speaking for poultry men, are quite agreeable figures. As long as:the wheat is available in sufficient quantities at anywhere about 6s a bushel, we would not like to see Australian grain come in, as this price is suitable:to poultry men, and I consider that the farmer could get a reasonable profit at this figure.. A prohibition of importations 'must benefit the farming community as well as tho poultry men themselves,".. ■.■.'■■ .
