CROQUET
NSW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

_. PALMERSTON N., This.Day. The New Zealand croquet tournament opened this morning in ideal summer weather, with play on the lawns of the three local clubs. The official opening was performerd by Mr. J. Caughley, president of the New Zealand Croquet Association, who ■welcomed the competitors. He alluded to the fact, that record entries had been received, and expressed his indebtedness to the Palmerston North clubs which had placed such excellent greens at the disposal of the Tournament Committee. Mr. Radford, president of the Manawatu Croquet Club also spoke and mentioned the special efforts made to have the greens in; good condition. He welcomed the visiting competitors to the centre. ..■■■..
The entries total 244, and.the holders of the Dominion honours are defending their titles. Competitors are here from Christchurch, Hastings, Patea, Hamilton, Wanganui, Wellington, and Dunedin. Up to 1 o^clock no championship matches had been played, but a start had been made with handicap - everfts.
