"MONDAYISING" THE DAY
MAYOR SYMPATHETIC
During the absence of the Mayor in: Auckland a petition bearing about 2000 signatures was forwarded to his office, praying that^ he should request citizens to observe' Anniversary Day on Monday, instead of to-morrow, the "Mondayising" of holidays falling upon. Saturday being in accordance with general past custom. :'■
Mr. Norwood, who returned to town only this morning, stated to-day that he much Tegretted that he had been unable to refer to the matter earlier. "As the various industrial awards definitely name Anniversary Day as a sta- = tutory holiday," he remarked, "no declaration of mine can relieve employers from their ol^igation to observe Saturday as the, weekly half-holiday; I am personally, however, in full accord with the desire of the petitioners, and would request such employers as are not bound by their obligations to observe Monday as the holiday, in lieu of Saturday. I am entirely in favour of the policy of 'Mondayising' holidays, fixed by date, which era- soi often fall upon Saturdays." •■■■ --•■-•• ..
