(By Telegraph.) (Special t» "The Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. According to advics received by the Auckland office of the Pacific Cable Board the cable steamer Faraday has removed the slight defect which revealed itself in the new cable; between. Suva a,nd Fanning Island. The vessel left Fanning Island this morning for Sydney. En route she will call at Suva to deposit in the board's tanks the^ cable not at present required. Tests on the hew cable which runs from Suva to Bamfield, British Columbia, via Fanning Island, have given, it is claimed, results beyond all expectations. The guaranteed speed of the cable is stated to have been exceeded by 100 per cent., and the signals recorded on the tapes at the rate of 240 words a minute are more distinct than are those given by the old cable when it was working at only 30 words a minute. In accordance with the terms of the contract for making and laying the cable, the new cable will not ibc taken over by the Pacific Cable Board until it has given satisfactory service for 30 flays. During that time tl.o contractors will have the cable at their disposal for some hours during the day for testing purposes. 6
