Within the last year or two the club's playing strength has been greatly depleted by deaths and retirements. This is to be regretted, because the Newtown Club has always beea noted for ita keenness in tournament and other games. Last season a weed gave a good deal of trouble, but this is being successfully dealt with, and the playing qualities of the green are rapidly improving. An innovation at Ne-sjtown this year.is a champion rinks competition, aid twelve teams have entered. The interest in this competition is being well sustained, while the other competitions have attracted larger numbers of entries than those of recent years. Notwithstanding losses by death or resignation the club's membership has increased
slightly, sixteen new members having joined within the last two or thnS, months. Another British. Visit. "Boomerang," of the Sydney "Beferee," announces that he haa received a letter from Mr. Melbourne Orchard advising that Mr. George Wright wants to make another trip through Australia and New Zealand, and proposes to make tip a private party of eight players, moving about from place to place as they like, playing friendly games. Mr. Wright was president of the English Association last year, and is well known throughout New Zealand M the captain of the British bowling team which toured the Dominion last December and January. Mr. F. Gostling, president kt thai Graceville Bowling Club, Brisbane, Queensland, is touring New Zealand for, three months. He entered for the Queensland 'bowling team that was to tour New Zealand, but owing to the small number 0/ entries the tour had to be abandoned. Mr. Goatling ia ac«companied by his wife. He k tt pec--sent touring the South Island. ' Manawatu Tournament. The Manawatu Bowling Centre ia m« verting to its annual New Year tourney, consequent on the decision of the 'Wa* nganui Centre to hold its Easter tout. ■ nament again. A couple of years or so ago the two centres, whose tournaments clashed, agreed to each abandon one Manawatu the New Year gathering and Wanganui the Easter one. This excel. lent arrangement, however, only lasted one year, Wanganui reverting to the old unsatisfactory state of affairs. Tha Manawatu tournament will be held on Ist, 3rd, and 4th January, commencing at 9 a.m. each day. The first prize is four trophies, each of £3 3s, with a banner and Stansell Shield, and the see. ond prize £2 2s trophies for each play, er in the rink. Tour of the President. At the last meeting of the Dominion Council Executive, Mr. Thomson took the opportunity of extending a welcome to the president (Mr. J. W. Hardley) after his recent tour of the South Island, and was supported by Messrs. Gladding and Yeoman. In reply, Mr. Hardley spoke as follows: "Having officially visited the whole of the centres of the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association in the South Island, ten in all, I desire to place on recoid my high appreciation of the wholehearted and most generous manner in. which Councillors Benzie, Barnett, Healey, Moycs, Marlow, Fastier, and London so ably supported and assisted ma at great inconvenience and expense to themselves. The presidents and officers of the centres I also thank for their unbounded kindness and consideration^ together with the presidents, officers, and members of the various clubs visited. No more could have been done to make my visit profitable in the interests of the game and enjoyable to myself personally. It was a great pleasure for me to note the strong loyalty to and the splendid feeling existing toward the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association throughout the whole of the South Island. My tour has been one that I shall ever remember with pleasure, and if . have in a small measure done anything to further the interests of the' association and bowling generally I am more than satisfied.'^
