Considerable improvements are being effected on the area of land fronting the V.M.C.A. building in Bridge street. Carters and working bees have been busy for some time raisin? the level. The objective is the provision of a grass court lor the game of basketball. The committee in connection with the vocational guidance for boys, of which Archdeacon Dart is chairman, recently met and made arrangements, for the work to be put in motion. Early in the year an advisory council will be elected from representatives of trades and industries to work in conjunction with the Management Committee and with school authorities and technical instructors.
Mr. j. M. Fox, who is leaving Nelson to take over the secretaryship of the Thames Harbour Board, was the recipient of a presentation from the Athletic Cricket Club, of which, he lias been secretary for the last three years. The Murchison County. Council has been informed that the Government has made a free grant of £16,000 towards the cost of repairing flood damage. Mr. John Arliss Guy, a well-known and respected settler, passed away at his residence, Ngatimoti, on 19th December, aged 76. He was a member of the first Motueka Harbour Board, and was continuously re-elected until he retired a short time ago. The late Mr. Guy was for many years secretary of Court Perseverance, A.0.F., Motuekii.
The weather lately has been all that could be desired. Many old Nelsonians and other visitors are arriving to spend Christmas in the Nelson district. All shopkeepers report business as good.
