THE TRAFFIC PROBLEM
STATEMENT BY CIVIC LEAGUE.
A statement regarding the Kent terrace improvements was made to a "Post" reporter to-day by Mr. J. H. Whitaker, president of the Civic League, on behalf of the executive. "The Civic League," said Mr. Whitaker, "again wish to make it quite clear that Miey are in entire sympathy with the carrying out of city improvements either in Kent terrace or- elsewhere, and have no objection to the narrowing of the reserve. They, however, repeat that, in their opinion, the council 'acted somewhat hastily, and that insufficient consideration was given to the proposal,- and, further, that everything should have been done on strictly constitutional lines. They also think that in the spending of £14,000 proper consideration should have been given to the claims of other much-need-ed works that this sum of money might be expended upon. Although the council is now free to carry out this work we are afraid that the general public are not even now clear as to what is actually proposed. Are we to have oneway or two-way traffic (which latter was suggested by the Magistrate), or is the widening merely for the purpose of a parking place? A doubt exists in our minds as to whether the remedy now proposed will actually provide a solution of the traffic problem. We •ire strongly of opinion that Mr. Hart, the now City Engineer, should be' asked to investigate the proposal thoroughly, and . report to the council before the work is further proceeded with.. At last night's meeting of the Civic League Executive a resolution was carried urging the adoption of this procedure."
