A HEARTY RESPONSE

CHRISTMAS APPEAL FOR LEPER PATIENTS.

The response which has been made by the people of Ne>v Zealand and Karotonga to the appeal made by the Minister of the Cook Islands for Christmas comforts for the leper patients at the Makogai leper station has been generous in the extreme; and Sir Maui Pomare desires to make his grateful acknowledgments to all who have assisted. Undoubtedly the' recent visit of two of the French nursing sisters to New Zealand, on furlough, lielped greatly to stimulate interest and sympathy in the welfare of the patie.uts, and in the extraordinarily fine work which the sisters of the French. Catholic Mission are carrying out in lie remote tropical island of Makogai. As the result of the appeal made by the Minister, at the suggestion of the Government of Fiji, approximately £50 in cash has beec. received, of which a portion has come from the Oook Islands. The Catholiceommunity of New Zealand has subscribed about £40, which has been sent forward through Dean Eegnault. In addition, Ghristmas gifts of all kinds, and appropriate to. patients of all. ages, have been sent in great quantities through the <3ook Islands Department and Dean Eegnault, These gifts, through the generosity of the Union Steam Ship Company, the Eailway Department, and the Post aaid Telegraph Department, will be transported free to the leper island, and will be received there in good time for &m----tribution on Christmas Day.

Dean Regnault states that it has been very gratifying to receive so many ..parcels, sometimes from anonymous donors, and sometimes from friends, not only from residents in the city, but from all parts of the .Wellington provincial district. On behalf of . the French nursing sisters, Dean Regnault roturns thanks to the donors. He was particularly impressed by, and feels especially .grateful for, two parcels— one from a girls' class of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Sunday School (with a monetary donation from the teachers), and another gift from some little girls of St. Peter's Mission branch of the Ej^g's Crusaders,
