PROGRESS IN WELLINGTON CENTRAL

'As': a well-attended meeting of the Wellington Central Eesidents and Rate- •• payers' Beautifying and Progressive Association, held in the Arp Street Mission Hall, Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., presiding, it was reported that the preliminary -work for the bituminising of Aro street had been commenced, and the executive anticipated that repairs to the'footpaths, which were in-a deplorable state, and other needed improvements would be carried out forthwith. The alleged use of defective timber: ana of the lack of provision for adequate drainage in a building recently erected were complaints placed, before the meeting, and it was decided that the - executive should look into the matter in the interests of the din+rict. Association rules were submitted and adopted. Mr. C. Tanner was appointed auditor. . ■ Correspondence read by the secretary, Mr. S. Booek, included a letter from the Town Clerk in regard to the representations of a deputation of the residents which waited on the City Council soino weeks ago. The executive reported that the Mayor, Mr., C. B. Norwood, and: several councillors had visited the locality to inquire into its needs, and that City Councillor H. D. Bennett, chairman of the Works Committee, and Mr. Ken Luke, Acting-City Engineer, had made an/inspecting tour of the district, along with several members of the executive.' It' was also believed that there was every prospect that more important necessary improvements would be placed on.'-!the estimates for next year. i Mr. L. Hennessy reported that steps were being taken by the Street Light- j ing Committee of the council to arrange for the improved lighting of. the locality, which was long over-due. ,The executive was further instructed to bring before the City Council the danger-to life -and property from the gorse which was allowed to grow unchecked ia the neighbourhood.
