NEW ZEALAND BUTTER STOCKS FOR W.C. PORTS.
In the course of his report on the conditions of Now Zealand butter and cheese in the Old Country, Mr. F. W. Grainger, shipping and refrigerating expert of the New Zealand Dairy Producers' Board, writes :—"On our visit early in September wo visited almost every cool store in botli Liverpool and Manchester, and were very surprised to discover that wo had practically no produce at either of these ports, whereas our produce was piled up in London to the extent of about 640,000 boxes of butter and 42,000 crates of cheese, tho most of the latter being in very poor storage, and the loss due to condition must in the aggregate run into a largo amount of money. Wo were informed in Manchester that it was impossible -to sell New Zealand cheese, ex London, against Canadian direct shipments, as tho charges from London meant 2s 6d per cwt, against New Zealand, and, further, that although inquiries were coming to hand for New Zealand, no business could be done, as there were no stocks available ex ship at either port. It would appear desirable to look closely into this position and carry certain stocks in West Coast ports to meet current demands. Had a few thousand crates of cheese and a few thousand boxes of butter been In store in tho two centres mentioned it would have helped to reduce stocks In London and meet 6urrent demands, without loading the produce with railage from London. It has to be remembered that Liverpool and Manchester are handy ports for Irish butter, and within a few days of Canadian ports, so that competition from these • sources, as well as Denmark and Finland and other Continental producing countries, lias to be met by. cutting out all unnecessary costs."
