BASKETBALL

SATURDAY'S MATCHES

Senior A

'Varsity 24, v. Y. Gym. 12. Wesley 31, v. Training College 10. Gilby's 20, v. Y.W.C.A. 16.

Y. Gym. were seriously handicapped by tho absence of L. Sutton ill the goal third, but they managed to keep even with 'Varsity during the first spell. In the second half, 'Varsity kept Y. Gym. on the defence with their quick passing movements in the centre. E. Ayling stopped many of 'Varsity's attacks., but she lacked support, both in the centre and I the goal thirds. 10. Storey played excellently for the Gym. defence, and prevented 'Varsity from piling up a big score. Y. Gym. have improved tremendously in style and technique this season, but they cannot yet equal the splendid combination of the 'Varsity team. Wesley were one thrower short in their match against Training College. _ This, however, did not hinder Wesley in the least. The two Wesley goals played an excellent game, and managed to clear their three defenders comparatively easily. Training College were inclined to overdefend. Their centre is their strongest third. 2i. Page and E. Park played exceedingly well. The College goal third had a weak link in D. Orr, and the goals did not make the best of their opportunities. Also Wesley's defence, with the exception of E. Bell, was weak. They were lacking in combination. Wesley did not show as good form as in previous matches. In the second spell the game was very even. The score at half-time was Wesley 22, Training College 6, and at the end of the second snell the game went to Wesley by 31-10. Gilby's played well i-n their' match against Y.W.C.A. Their play was . specially good in the goal third, where B. Taylor and A. Lithgow, with the three Y.W.C.A. defenders against them, succeeded in scoring sufiicient goals to give their team the victory. Although Y.W.C.A. led by four points at half-time, the centres played badly in tho second spell, aud the goals failed to convert the few passes their centres gave them. Gilby's fully deserved their win. Their passing has imporved greatly. B. Lithgow, however, still gives too many penalties for over-guarding—this is the only/weakness in a Very promising team.
