TRAGEDY ON HOCKEY FIELD
Tragedy intervened during the progress of a hockey match at Dalefield, Wairarapa, on Saturday afternoon. Tho Hataitai schoolboys had met and defeated" the Dalefield school team by 7 goals to 1 in the annual contest for the Kean-Croker Challenge Stick, and, as was the custom, the committees of both schools met afterwards in a friendly match. During this game Mr. H. A. Knowles, an elderly and respected member of the Dalefield School Committee, suddenly collapsed and died of heart failure. Mr. Knowles had taken an active part in sporting matters in the district and was an old Wairarapa Rugby player, and his death cast a gloom over the gathering. It was decided not to play tlie usual match between the old boys of the schools. On behalf of the visitors, Mr. H. E. Searle, chairman of the -Hataitai School Committee, expressed sorrow at the sad occurrence, and paid a tribute to the high esteem in which Mr. Knowles had been held in the district.
