BOXING

■ V "CtSTUS" HAY WANTED

PURDY DECLINES WELLINGTON'S

OFFER

OTHERS TO FILL'THE BREACH.

During the wefck the Match Committee of the W.B.A. has been endeavouring to arrange a match, for this mouth, and had high hopes of putting on Artie Hay with Charlie Purdy. The choice was an admirable one, but unfortunately Purdy will not accept the terms offered. Hay is willing to fight here, and is anxious to meet Purdy again in view of the somewhat doubtful decision that was given when last the pair met at Auckland. Sporting" writers are not satisfied with the re suit of that encounter in the Northern city, end would welcome a returu match. Hay, in the opinion of some; gave Purdy a torrid time, and if that is so Wellington fans would like to see tho men in action. Purdy does not like Hay's weight, but he should know the measure of the Hawkes Bay boy well enough not to fear much from him. This is not meant to imply that Purdy can beat Hay easily, but that on his past performances with other boxers he should be able to cope with the onslaught of an opponent a few pounds heavier than himself. Hay lias caused a sensation in boxing circles lately, and should be. in the running for many engagements. Wellington can wait its turn, however, and if Purdy's services are not available, there are others who are willing to fill tho gap. ' Jamito and Hay would prove an attractive match, while Elmour and the welter champion would also draw well. It is quite on the cards that one of these matches will be arranged. Since the above notes were written, the local association has announced definitely that Hay and Jamito will be the principals in a tournament to be staged at the Town Hall on 12th July. Williams to go Home. Merv Williams has decided that it is not much benefit to him staying over here any longer, and is rather "fed up with things in general. He would have liked a return match with Lachie ll'Donald, but the Timaru idol was not ' available. Williams expects to sail for Sydney in a very short time, as he has been promised a number of. engagements which should be well.worth accepting. He has been guaranteed four fights in Brisbane, but there has been no stipulation as to the time they are to take place. Tiger Payne, Sunny Jim Williams, Len Johnson, ana Frisco M'Gale will be his opponents. Westport Wants Ehnour. Dick Blmour received a letter this week from the Westport Boxing Association asking him whether or not he would meet either Casey or Hay there at the end of July. Elmour will probably "accept the offer if the purse is reasonable, but if his opponent is to be Hay he would like the contest to be for the welterweight title. Elmour has beon in the country for well over twelve months now, and feels that he lias a right to challenge Hay in a championship contest. Notes- . Al M( Donald meets Jamito at Wan'ganui to-night, and if all goes well Wanganui fans should have little to complain of.. Jamito will be contesting his eighth fight in New Zealand tonight, and ono likes his chances of success. The Philippino has a full programme for several months ahead, and it ceems that he *ont get a reßt till he has fought under the auspices of every association in the country. They all want him, and the reason is not hard to find. When once he is in the ring he does not know the meaning of the word "stop."
