SYDNEY'S UNDERGROUND
420 TRAINS AN HOUR. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, 24th June. When the Sydney Central Railway Station was built it was looked upon by not a few people as a structure whoso massiveness and grandeur were not justified. To-day it is so congested that it is a wonder people arc not injured or killed in the nightly battles for trains and seats. In the light of the congestion there the question has been raised as to how long the city underground railway will suffice tor Sydney's growing population. On the basis of the official view that it will cope with another million people, it ought to be adequate for the needs of the metropolis for another twenty years or so. The ultimate capacity of the. railway will be 420 trains an hour, with ability to cope with 500,000 passengers an hour. The railway is growing steadily under the feet of citizens, who sec nothing of the gigantic project except earthworks at occasional points.
