HUNTSMAN'S PROTEST
TAKING AWAY A RACING DAY.
j; A protest was made by Mr. A. M. Samuel- (Ohhiemuri) in the House of Representatives yesterday against what he des-■eHbed-as the nefarious effort of the Wai- ■ _ato Racing Club to induce the Racing Conference to take away the one day's 'racing w-hich' the Waikato Hunt, Club, of which he was a member, enjoyed. .The Hunt Club; he said, had enjoyed Labour Day as its one racing day for tWenty-years, but now the Waikato Racing Club wanted to secure that day. A remit-was coming before the Racing Conference to provide that hunt clubs must r'ace.-ntithin a. certain period, and the effect, of that proposal would be to deprive the Waikato" Hunt Club of its right to race On Labour Day. That was a most unsportsmanlike action for one sporting body to take up against another sporting body. ■ 'When he had mentioned the .matter .to _the Minister of Internal Affairs the* Minister had stated that the Hunt Club had enjoyed its privilege for' twenty so long as it complied with the rules of racing he would!see that the club was not interfered with. The speaker maintained that the hunt clubs were entitled ,;to protection against the racing clubs, as they served a very useful purpose. "'lf; the.proposal he was complaining about ,^ere agreed to by the Racing Conference/it would cause a good deal of trouble, and would start something in the nature of a revolution so far as racing was concerned. Once that kind ot thing wjja. allowed tp creep in, they did not kiSbw where it would stop, and he appealed* to the Racing Conference not to allow the» proposal to go through. -
