CITY DELUGED WITH RAIN
TRAFFIC SERIOUSLY AFFECTED
HEAVY WEATHER WIDELY EXPERIENCED.
For th n best part of an hour ]ast evening the city and suburbs - experienced something like a deluge. At 7.30 rain set in so heavily that within a few minutes the water-tables in the city and suburbs were flooded. The water in many places spread across the roadway. Berhampore particularly suffered, and iv a number of cases the water was eight or ten inches deep, and some business premises were invaded. When the downpour had spent itself many footpaths were left with a blanket of silt. The engines of many of the buses on the private services to the suburbs were drenched and put out of service. The Corporation motor service suffered little embarrassment, though two machines wore docked this morning to be dried. The trams on the Island Bay route were frequently stopped through the water splashing up to the resistance mechanism and causing shortcircuits. The service, however, suffered no material handicap. The rain continued throughout the night, but in less severity, and to-day many outdoor trades ceased operations. Work on the waterfront this morning was practically at a standstill, the onlj oversea liner to be worked being the j Rernuera. Operations on this vessel, however, were not commenced till 10.30. At midday the ivealner cleared, but remained much colder than it has been for some time past. There was a strong electrical disturbance last night, and thunder rumbled in the distance for some hours.
