NUMBERS AFFECTED

ESTIMATES DIFFER.

(Received 4th May, 9 a.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day.

It is impossible to give anything like a definite estimate of the number of iron • 'orkers affected by the strike. According to the Trades Hall estimate three thousand men have been discharged, and 20,000 to 25,000 others will be directly or indirectly affected. Most unions have already, taken steps to apply to the Federal Arbitration Court for variations in the award to secure a forty-four hour week. The Minister of Labour is keeping in close touch with the principals in both the forty-four hours' and the mine engineers ' disputes. In regard to the latter he states that proposals are' under consideration which may avert a cessation of work on Friday.
