OVERLAND JOURNEY

HARDSHIPS OF SLEDGING.

(Received 3rd May, 11 a.m.)

FAIRBANKS, 2nd May.

Later details of Malcolm-Smith's overland journey to Point Barrow show that the party suffered severe hardships owing to intense cold and shortness of food. Of 68 dogs with which they started only 15 were alive on leaching Point Barrow. Many died of hunger, and others were so weak that they were shot to end their misery. In view of the difficulties so far encountered, Captain Wilkins is considering the re-organisation of the arrangements for conveying stores to the base, and carrying out the general plans of tho expedition.
