Mr. W. G. Riddcll, 8.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. John Alexander Mitchell M'Leod (44) was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on a charge of being found by night without lawful excuse in the Columbia Private Hotel. Two first-offending inebriates were each fined 10s, the amount of their bail. For a fifth offence of drunkenness, Michael M'Guirk (38) was fined £1, in default seven days'-, imprisonment. He was fined £2, in default seven day*' imprisonment, for a breach of his prohibition order. "Keep off the drink if you don't want to spend a year on Rotoroa Island," advised Mr. Riddell. ■ , ■ Guiseppe Farri (27) was remanded to appear on Wednesday on a charge of stealing a gold chain, valued at £2, from Bartollo Russo. ' George James Becre, a blacksmith (26), pleaded guilty to a charge of vagrancy, and also admitted stealing a quantity of biscuits and chocolates, .valued at £2, from the Cygnet Shipping Co., and wilfully damaging to the extent of £1 15s a lifeboat, tank, and fittings,1 the property of'the same company. "He broke' into-the locker of the Cygnet at the Patent Slip, and stole the biscuits and chocolates," said Chief Detective Ward. "He has a long list of previous convictiofts,"aitd has served a term of three years' imprisonment for breaking and entering." On the theft charge, Bcerc was sent to gaol for fourteen days, and on the vagrancy charge to one month's imprisonment. He was fined £1, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for tho wilful damage.
