A trophy, known as "The Cup," is regularly played for by members of the various bowling clubs who are engaged in business. In the latest contest the Stock Agents (Bryon, Brown, Larcomb, and Kerslake skip) beat the holders, Insurance (Wilson, Ennis, Eadford, and Trott skip) by 20 points to 12. The amount expended on outdoor relief by the Palmerston North Hospital Board was £2623 2s 7d. It is estimated that £2600 will be sufficient for the-cur-rent year.
Mr. William Henry Cornthwaite, who was killed in a railway crossing accident near Taupiri on Thursday, afternoon, was the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryant Cornthwaite, of 141, Fitzherbert street, Palmerston North. His elder brother is also employed in the Waikato. The annual revision of the jury list was made yesterday by Messrs. T. K. Hodder and D. W. Low, J.P.'s. Mr. D. C. Forno, of the clerical staff at the Palmerston North Railway Station, and Mr. A. E. Hardy, porter, have resigned from the service ,m order to go into business.
Dr. H. J. C. Durward, of Pa.merstou A orth,- intends making a trip to England, and will leave by the Turakina.early next week. He expects to be away between six and eight months. Yesterday's meeting of the * Business Girls Luncheon Club was presided over by Miss D. Hollier, and an interesting address on Y.W.C.A. ' work was given by Miss E. M. Griffin, M.A., national secretary for New Zealand.
Mr. T. Johnson,' the lozTy-driver who was injured in the level crossing accident at Levin on Wednesday afternoon, is still an inmate of the Palmerston North -Hospital. His condition is extremely critical. -The Palmcrston North Magistrate's .Court returns show' that during the three months ended on 31st March, 355 males and 10 females appeared before the Court on criminal or quasi-criminal-charges, the figures' for the corresponding quarter of 1925 being 269 and 9 respectively. During the quarter the sum ot £8724 was sued for and £4870 was -ecovered, the figures for the March quarter of 1925 being;;.£e'S4 and £4343. The number of plaintij entered was 090, an increase of 219. The civil fees paid increased from, £500 ISs 6d to £505 17s, and ,n °™ninal fees from £46 Is 6d .to £6G 10s. .1 ne fines paid rose from £233 19s to £y!4 19s.
-. . C. G. S. Wilson, of the staff of the local railway station, has been transferred to the relief department at Wellington, and will leave at an early date. Constable P. Jl'Entree, of WL ...garei and formerly of the District Police Office at the Palmerston North Station, was a visitor to town this week. When he was transferred North ho left at short notice, so that on his temporary return his tormer comrades and the memuers of the Court staff took the opportunity to make him a presentation. This took the form 01 a pair of military hair brushes and a shaving outfit.
