WALES SIDE,
{United l Jr«!ss Association..—Copyright) SYDNEY, 9th April.
The first serious game iv which the New Zealand tennis representatives have participated took place to-day, when the visitors met New South Wales, whose team, with the exception of J. O. Anderson, was the be3t available. The weather was ideal, there being no wind, and-the bright sunshine enured little trouble. The New Zealanders, although beaten, gave a very creditable display, especially Wallace d Smyth, who, in the doubles, beat Ixaimi and Willard, New South Wales' strongest combination. In the singles France and Andrews gained victories against Cummings and Peach respectively.- Cummings appeared not to exerfc himself too much, and Franco cleverly placed the ball well away from him. Wallace anl Baker provided the best singles exhibition, Baker's backhand play being on the weak side, and Wallace taking full advantage of this. Baker, however, -who is a tall nir.n with a long reach, gained many points at the net. Seay commenced well against Kalms, but tired in the second and third sets. • Andrews, driving fqreefully, kept Peach on the run.
In the doubles the New Zealand combination was not all that it should be. This doubtless was due in large measure to the lack of practice, owing to recent wet weather. In the first set of tho games against Kalms and Willard, the New Zcalanders Wallace and Smyth, kept to the back-line, and consequently lost. In the second and third sets they came forward to the net, volleying their opponents' strokes, and won. The following are. the scores, the New Couth Wales players being mentioned first:— SINGLES.
