HOSTEL TO BE ENLARGED
The inadequacy of the accommodation at Waitomo for visitors attracted by the famous caves has been recognised by the Tourist Department for some time past, and the reports of the demands upon the resort during the Easter holidays have shown the necessity for something being done to meet the position. The Government has now decided to go ahead with the provision of extra accommodation.
A vote of £25,000 was made last year .for the purpose of extending the present Government hostel at Waitomo, bnt actually only a portion of the money has been spent, it being necessary before foundations could be laid to spend some time upon the preparation of the site, which is at the top of a rise. Levelling has been put in hand, and attention has also been given to the needs of motorists requiring to park their motor-cars.
Cabinet decided yesterday, upon the matter being brought up again by the Minister-in-Charge of the Tourist Department (the Hon. W. Nosworthy), that the work of erecting the extra accommodation should now be proceeded with. It is hoped that when the next holiday season comes round the ho;3tel will be able < to cater for a much larger number of patrons than hitherto.
