OIL TANKER EXPLODES
ON LOWER MISSISSIPPI.
(Reuter'a Telegram.) NEW YORK, Bth April, The New Orleans authorities have been notified that an oil tanker, the name of which has 'not been determined, exploded on Thursday night in the Mississippi; Biver, 20 miles below there. Several menaro believed to have been killed. A large' number were rescued from tho river. The water is covered with burning petroleum., One report said the captain and pilot Qf the vessel were known to have been killed, that thirty-five men were missing, and fifteen of the crew were rescued." Unverified reports were that the ship was the Dutch tanker, Silvanus. Another report states that when several gasoline tanks were placed on board the tank vessel O. T. Waring an explosion occurred on Thursday afternoon. Twenty-nine men were injured and twenty-three were rescued from the river. Four hava not been accounted for. T,here were two hundred men on board the vessel at the time of the explosion.
. Later. Later information establishes the name of the Dutch steamer as Silvanus, which was in collision with the oil tanker Thomas H. Wheeler, An explosion on the' Silvanus followed.
