SOME BEMABKABLE FIGURES.
The Postmaster-General of Britain has issued a statement of telephone progress in the London area during 1925, which is a revelation of the work accomplished, says the "Daily Telegraph." The magnitude of the work done may be estimated from the following statistics extracted from the report:— ( London area (square miles) .. 750 Number of exchanges 107 New exchanges opened 4 New exchanges in hand .... 10 Call offices 4,403 Street kiosks ...... 212 Lines connected to exchanges 269,801 Increase per cent: :;;....... 10.4 Telephones .;::::;;..;. 476,813 Private wires ■.. 15,000 Telephone removals 28,000 Calls per working day 1,667,000 Average calls per night .... 61,000 Average time of answer to calls (sees) 5.4 Outgoing trunk calls 26,500 Phonograms dealt with 1,423,781 Automatic installations, capacity (lines) 45,000 Do., projected (lines) 147,000 Mileage of single wire ...... 1,800,000 Increase of mileage during year 131,000 Mileage of wires in underground cables 7,000 Tons of copper in cables .... 10,000 Tons of lead sheathing .. 40,000 Telephonists and supervisors . 8,200 New entrants in 1925 ' 1,200
