A HAPPY MEMORY

BOLDIEE, STATESMAN, SCHOLAE,

AND PATBIOT.

Garlanded with oak leaves,, wreaths, and flowers and set at the entrance to the Bchurz summer estate, near Lake George, New York,- a granite bench inscribed to the memory of Carl Schurz, Senator, soldier, statesman, and author, was unveiled recently with elaborate ceremony. George M'Aneny, of New York, chairman of the State Transit Commission and chairman of the Carl Schurz Memorial Committee of New York, presided, giving the opening address and introducing Miss Marianne Schurz, daughter of the statesman to whom the bench was dedicated, who unveiled ths bench.

The main address was made by Oswald Garrison Villard, editor of tho "Nation." ..Mr. Villard's tribute covered briefly Carl Schurz's life, .his revolt against the rule of autocracy in Germany, Ms activities at Chanceilorsville and Gettysburg, his accomplishments as a political moralist in the periods he was Senator and Secretary of the Interior in President Hayes's Cabinet, his work as an author and his great love for the mountains anil shore of Lake George, where he spent his summers for more than a quarter of. .a century.

The bench is of a solid block of Vermont .granite, ten feet long an 3 weighing five tons. At the two top corners arc inscribed the dates 1829----1906, while under it, facing tho North-west Bay road highway, arc .tho words:

"To the happy memory of Carl Sehurz, soldier, statesman, scholar, and patriot; For fourteen years, 1592 to 1905, ho rested within these precincts, ivhosp beauty was his neverending joy. Erected .September, J. 923." The bench, a work of art in -the field of granite cutting, -\vas matle ijr Wootiburj", A'ermont.
