DIRECT TAXATION
A POSSIBLE REDUCTION
WHAT MR, CHURCHILL MAY DO,
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPIRIGBT.) (AUSTRALIAN.NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION,) (Received 30th December, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 29th December. The "Daily Mail" understands that Mr. Churchill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is satisfied he can frame the 1926 Budget at a substantially lower figure than that of 1925, but by excluding the coal subsidy, which will probably total thirty millions, it is expected that the balance-sheet at 31st March will show a deficit. There is a possibility of a reduction in direct taxation provided Mr. Churchill succeeds in obtaining Cabinet's approval of new taxes, such as a tax on betting, a whisky export tax, and an extension of the luxury tax.
