BEACH GALAS
There was a big crowd yesterday at the beuch gala at Lyall Bay, where conditions were idcul for a. wholesome day's entertainment. The side-shows were well patronised and i'un on the merry-go-rounds, and ocean waves and other "deviceK" waxed fast and furiouu. At night dancing Avas enjoyed on the Parade, and this will be a-regular feature of the gala. This evening all the side-shows will be open. Following is tho result of yesterday's baby competition:—Gills, Lucy Horrice and Shirley Sutherland, 1. Boys: Brian Cook and Trevor James Page, 1; Konald Kobinson, 2. Late entries:' Esma Drindrid, 1; Lauretta. M'Donald, 2. Tho show for babies under 18 months will take place next Friday, Ist January, and foe those- under two years on Saturday, 2nd January. Special attractions for New Year's Day and the (lay following will be the children's races and also races of every description for married ladies; the sand-building competitions will also bo held. . Kadi day the attendance at the big I'etolic carnival is being well mainlined. Numerous side-shows attract their (junta of compel itorti, and children and parents alike are catered for with nierry-so-roiuuls; ocean waves, and .suing boats. One of the most tin illnift ■kl>.>ws is that of the State Sisters, ivliose ilnrc-devil riding on motor-cycles in tlie "Globe of Death' 1 uifords excellent en-tfi-tainment. On Thursday, it is proposed to usher in the Xew Year with a huge bonfire, and on the same day and on Friday, Dave Pretty, world's champion axeman, and Bill Peck will give exhibition clinps. Jazzing adds to the gaiety each evening.
