FICTITIOUS PAY SLIPS

CLERK SENT TO GAOL. A method- by tvhich an employee robbed his firm of £47 by fictitious pay slips was explained in Hie Magistrate's Court to-day when Robert Arthur Thurston A homo, a clerk, aged 47, was charged' with obtaining £47 by false pretences. Chief-Detective Kemp, who prosecuted, stated for the past twelve months Aherne had been an employee of the Patent Siip Company as a time-keeper, at a wage of £5 a week. The charge related .to vouchers, 13 in all, and tho accused's operation'; had commenced on 23rd September, when lie obtained AI2 35.. By means of the 18 slips, all of which had been made out purporting to be for work done, he had obtained £47 11s Id. Before the vouchers became valid, it was necessary for them to be initialled by Mr. Patterson, at the Pat- | ent Slip, and. in most cases the forged vouchers bore the initials of Mr. Patterson. If Mr. Patterson's initials were not used, the initials of another responsible clerk- were used. When he obtained the money, Aherne appropriated it' to his own use. "He has been in a position of trust, and could no doubt have been charged with forgery, but he was charged summarily because I am of the opinion that your Worship can adequately punish him," declared the Chief- ■ Detective. The Magistrate (Mr. E. Page) commented on the fact that the accused had i abused a position of trust, and stated ] that he had probably also committed [ forgery. He would be sentenced to six I months' imprisonment.
