110,000 MOTOR VEHICLES IN NEW SOUTH WALES

Figures quoted at the half-yearly meeting of the Motor Traders' Association reveal strikingly the place to-day of the motor vehicle in this State. At present 11,351 motor vehioles are registered in New South Wales, including just on 75,000 motor-cars and nearly 15,000 motor-lorries. In taxation and registration motorists contributed £425,----000 to the revenue last year, with a substantial increase for the first half of this year, owing to the institution of the new rates levied on the weight of the vehicle. The authorities are being urged to consider the question of registering horsedrawn vehicles, as well w motor vehicles, thus compelling the owners of the former to contribute in some measure towards th* heavy direct taxation which motorists are now paying, and which, less 10 per cent.- for administration, is going to the Main Boads Board. The motorists are contending that not merely they but the owners of all vehicles using the roads should pay a fair proportion of taxation for making and maintaining roadi.
