FRANKLIN BY-ELECTION

MR. M'LENNAN'S MAJORITY OF ■ 3706.

With a majority of 3706, Mr. E. D. M'Lennan (Reform) has beaten Mr. J.'.S. Montgomerie (Labour) in a straight-out fight for the Franklin , seat, rendered vacant by the death of the Right. Hon. W. F. Massey. j The by-election was held yesterday, Mr. M'Lennan polling 5865 votes and Mr. Montgomerie 2159. There were 43 informal votes, and the number of absent voters' permits applied for was 257. On the occasion of the ' last General Election, Mr. Massey. defeated M,r. Rea, the Liberal candidate, by 5276 votes to 2526, so that Mr. M'Lennan's majority was 956 votes greater than .that of the late Prime Minister's.
