OBITUARY

A WELL-KNOWN NELSON

RESIDENT.

NELSON, 27th May

By the death of Mr. It. B. Jackson Nelson loses another highly-respected and prominent citizen. The late Mr. Jackson had been confined to his bed for the last five or six weeks, and his death was not unexpected. About eighteen months ago lie went to Sydney and underwent an operation, and on his return to Nelson had apparently benefited, but the improvement did. not continue. Deceased, who died at the age of 62 years, was the eldest son of the late Mr. 11. D. Jackson, who arrived in Nelson in 1842. He was a prominent business man of many years standing, and always took a keen interest in the welfare of his native city. Associated with Mr. W. Bout and tho late Mr. C. Y. Pell, the late Mr. Jackson was responsible for the founding of Talumanui, purchasing the Sands Estate and cutting it up for .settlement. The samo syndicate also cut up the Emier Glyn Estate, and the Arthur Estate at Wakefield. Deceased was a prominent member of the City Beautifying Society, and a generous donor to the beautifying of the Church Hill. He was keenly interested in the welfare of children, and quite recently donated £25 for the erection of more swings. 'Practically all the swings in the city's public places were donated by Mr. Jackson. The late Mr. Jackson, though always interested in local and general politics, was not- actively associated with local bodies beyond that of the Nelson Harbour Board, on which for some years, up to the time of his death, he was one of the Government nominees He was aJ P and a, member of the local branch of tlie Kefonn League, being a strong supporter and personal friend of tlie late Prime Minister.

During the war in association with the Hon. W. W. Snodgrass, Mr. Jackson, was joint secretary of the Empire Defence 1 mid, formed on sth August 1914.
