Members of the Eastbourne Borough Council met last evening for the purpose of allowing- Mr. J. T. Edmonds, of Montgomery, Neilsou, Edmonds Proprietary, Ltd., Australian engineers, to explain their proposed, scheme for draining the borough. For some time past the engineers have been discussing the matter with the Eastbourne Council, and their deliberations have been the subject oE several reports. The first plans were for gravitation towards several tanks placed along- the foreshore, but this idea, was rejected by ratepayers at a public meeting. Last evening Mr. Edmonds said thai his firm had now drawn tip a scheme involving two pumping stations, and a treatment tank placed ten chains south of (lie southern' boundary of the borough. The general scheme, he said, was to deal with sewerage for the whole of Eastbourne by gravity, and the two pumping stations. They were proposing to install a plant to-«ieal with a population of 1000 people,. rising ultimately to COOO people. Provision would be made for dealing with 60 gallons of sewerage for each person per day. The minimum size of sewerage mains would be six inches, and they would bo built to carry a How of 2o per cent, more than the engineers considered would be necessary they anticipated absolutely no difficulty, despite the low level of the land, in securing a self-velocity flow, and that condition would be guaranteed. Tho scheme was particularly well ventilated with manholes.

Councillor Holmes drew attention to the- fact tliat the scheme did not provide or the connection of every houso in the borough. He was not prepared to ngrco to :iuy Rcbcino Ijein- installed unless it met that objection. J| c raised the question of the Hooding of the sewers in times of flood.
