THE SECOND TUNNEL

WHICH IS THE BETTER ROUTE ?

HATAITAI ASSOCIATION WANTS

RIXON GROVE.

A good deal of discussion took ]/lace at the annual meeting of ihe Eaudtai Municipal Electors' Association last evening upon the question of the I est route for the new tunnel through M:mnt Victoria, a" matter to which reference was made in the annual report, as already published in "The Post."

The president (Mr. A. E. 3&tt) remarked that the .access to the district was •still very unsatisfactory. Although the matter had been under consideration since the passing of the 1920 igan schedule, the council had apparently nut yet settled its policy, 'and the past council had not kept faith with citizens. The Ellice street route was planned to work in with an east to west highway, but he did not see that such a highway was a necessity; there could be no demand for a direct linking up of Seatoun and Karori. The necessary thing was to get the traffic out of the city at the nearest point and Rixon • grove provided the best means. He intimated that the association would send another deputation to insist upon the Bixon iirove route proposal being investigated by competent engineers. WAIPAPA ROAD. Tho council's decision to place a bus upon Waipapa, road was also discussed, Mr.' Batt maintaining that such a service as far as the Roseneath fire station would not pay, and that people would not change from one vehicle to another. One bus could not possibly cater properly for the needs of the area served. The best plan would be to link up with Oriental Bay.

Mr. H. Pilmer contended that tho council, had been wise in deciding not to extend its tramways. A siriglo car line from Hataitai to the fire station would cost £11,000, and would cost Is 6d to 2s per car mile to run up the hill, while the bus could be run at a maximum of Is per mile. Some of the present lines would never return interest upon their outlay. . REVENUE AND WASTE. Mr. Batt returned to tho charge. In all big cities, he said, where the tramways had been thrown out the people had followed the transport. The new chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. Wright, would not spend one shilling un-lc-s he could get a shilling back from it.' 1..- said the tunnel -would not be a re-vnime'-prodncing proposition, but there was the economic Avaste as well as the loss of times on the part of those using the trams. Mr. Wright had said the city should not have an ambulance, and they could not get very far with a man who said things like that. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Mr. A. E. Batt was unanimously reelected president for the ensuing year; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Edwards, H. W. Tolan, and H. A. Hiiggins; committee, Messrs. Burt, Death, Filmer, Slceman, Gandar, Greensill, Johnston, Lezard, Little, Meltzer, Nelson, Sadd, fcearle, Sims, Thompson; lion, auditor J. L. Arcus.

The weekly midday meeting of the above will be held to-morrow (Friday) in the Y.W.C.A. Lecture Hall, from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. Adjutant Hayes, of the accounts department of the Salvation Army, will deliver a. short address, and Mr. H". D. Grocott will preside. The proposed order of service appears in Iho advertisinsT: columns.
