EXTENDING LOCAL GOVERN MENT
The New. States Commission, in its report, recommended a scheme fpfc the extension of local government by the creation of district councils, in endorsement of the idea of the Shire Association and the Local Government Association. It now remains for tho Government to say whether or not it favours the proposal. There is a strong feeling that sooner or later the scheme, or some modification o! it involving the administration of a number of duties which are not carried out by tho central Government, will be put into force, thus bringing at least one Australia State into line with other English-speaking and European countries, and with a reform which is said to have been found most efficient and economical.
