JOHN STREET TIP
10 THB EDITOR. Sir, —May I crave a small space in your popular paper in which to publish
my feelings' with regard to the now well-known municipal topic, the John street tip, or refuse dump? It appears that the City Fathers, ■with due and considerable forethought, have decided to extend the new John street tip along the l'eserve by Hutchison road, as far as the Hall street zig-zag, so that, inter alia, in a few decades they will be able to form a beautiful playground fof the rising generation. In the interim, however, the before-mentioned reserve must become a Mecca for old tins, broken bedsteads, sacks, junk, sawdust, old motor tires, filthy papers, and what not. This evening as I was passing this dumping-ground on the way home via Hutchison road, my nasal organs were assailed by an assorted effluvium emanating therefrom. It appears that several dray loads of the sawdust, filthy papers, and what not had been tipped over a .bank, and there left to burn without any care or supervision, with the result that the road was enveloped in fumes and smoke. A large percentage of the refuse, apparently disturbed by the fickle winds, was scattered over the neighbourhood, giving the appearance that an enormous_ paper-chase had been held in the environment at a prior date. If a stranger to our Empire City were to view this Sargossa of filth he would be justified in believing that the municipal authorities were ignorant as to the use of destructors. I, as a resident of Wellington for many years, having heard, however, that there is a destructor in operation in this city, would be obliged to inform him to the contrary. It is positively nauseating to have to pass the John street tip, either via, | Hall street zig-zag or Hutchison road, owing to the fact that muck is being burnt there night and day. A pedestrian has to run a gauntlet of offensive smells, smoke, and sparks. Surely the new council will do something to mitigate the offensiveness of this spot, and thus earn the gratitude of a large number of ratepayers.—l am, etc, SUSftTTRTF.T^
