TRAINS HELD UP

FLOODS AND DAMAGE IN THE '::'■'.' ... ..NORTH.

-MANY; PARTS AFFECTED,

The severity of a storm affecting most parts, of, the. North Island is indicated in ieprtß which have been received from yarious sources, and also in the fact that the Main Trunk railway service .las. been disorganised. The Wellington •District in the main has escaped tho ,worafc of the bad weather, -though .throughout the province rain has been general. From the information to hand it appears that the King Country, Taranaki,. and Auckland. have suffered most from the gale, floods and damage being reported in those districts. A wash-out at Piriaka, near Taumarunui, has caused a dislocation of the railway service on the Main Trunk line, but it is anticipated that the "all clear" signal will be made in time for a return to normal running to-morrow. According to tao official report from the Meteorological Office the worst effects of the disturbance have now passed. Locally the weather experienced since yesterday has taken a turn for the better. Except for a- small slip or two, there has been no damage* The Hutt lliver was considerably swpollen yesterday,' but has since subsided, though still above normal. The Hutt Eiver Board reported that all its works had stood well. A -slip occurred on the Hay wards side of the Silv-erstream Bridge, but it was attended to, .and traffic was able to pass. Telephone lilies in the Wellington District .suffered no interference of any magnitude, but telegraph communication be- I tween Wellington and Auckland has been J affected. For a period this morning the Wellington-Auckland telegraph line was interrupted,- but subsequently telegraph • work was able to proceed satisfac-tdril-y^- -- ■■-■'■
